On 27 October 2006, it was announced that The Thick of It would be adapted for American television, focusing on the daily lives of a low-level member of the United States Congress and his staff. Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz would be the executive producer, along with Armando Iannucci and Richard Day. The pilot was directed by Christopher Guest, and produced by Sony Pictures and BBC Worldwide.[30][31] The cast included John Michael Higgins, Oliver Platt, Michael McKean, Alex Borstein, and Wayne Wilderson.[32][33]

ABC did not pick up the show for its 2007 Autumn schedule,[34] Iannucci distanced himself from the pilot stating "It was terrible...they took the idea and chucked out all the style. It was all conventionally shot and there was no improvisation or swearing. It didn't get picked up, thank God."[35] Other networks including HBO, Showtime, and NBC expressed interest in the show,[36] and in April 2009, Iannucci re-entered talks with HBO over the possibility of an American adaptation.[35]

Януччи вот чо пишет о степени вовлечённости в производство: "My political comedy The Thick of It was sold by the BBC to an American network as a remake, and I went out to LA to watch what they were doing to it. I arrived to promises of fame and fortune, I had meetings with lorry-loads of men in very expensive shirts telling me how excited they were to see me while talking in the monotone of a drunk man grieving, and I was promised all sorts of involvement and then told it had already been cast and written and sold to a channel owned by Disney. I was taken to a meeting attended by more than 30 people to discuss the colour of the ties that would be worn by the actors on set. I was then dumped outside on to the pavement, which I resolutely refused to think of as a "sidewalk", and I walked back to my barren hotel, stared desperately into a minibar the size of a cattle ranch, and got the next flight home".
